The province's Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate after a man was fatally shot by RCMP.

Mounties were called to an Eastern Passage residence Thursday at around 4 p.m. after being told an armed man was uttering threats.

RCMP say responding officers found a 60-year-old man armed with a handgun outside the home.

They say he did not cooperate with police instructions and then raised the gun towards the officers.

The officers fired their guns and called in EHS. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and no one else was hurt.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this difficult time," said RCMP in a news release.

They say they will not be able to release any more information now that SiRT is investigating.

SiRT is asking for witnesses to contact them at 1-855-450-2010.

The independent team investigates all serious incidents involving police actions, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
