A 25-year-old man is facing several charges after three RCMP officers were assaulted on the weekend.

Police say it started at around 11:15 p.m. Saturday night.

An officer was on patrol in the Windmill Rd. area when the employee of a business waived them over to check on a parked vehicle that seemed suspicious.

Mounties say as the officer went over to the vehicle, the driver got out.

The officer believed the driver showed signs of impairment and when they tried to talk to him, police say the driver tried to punch the officer.

"The driver was taken to the ground, handcuffed and continued to assault the member by kicking him," said RCMP in a news release.

"During this time, the three other occupants of the vehicle fled the area, but were located a short time later and taken to a safe location."

The driver was taken to the Cole Harbour detachment for a breath test

"At the detachment, the driver assaulted two other officers by kicking and headbutting them," said Mounties. "The driver refused to provide breath samples."

Police say as the suspect was taken to booking he "continuously bashed his head on the safety shield."

EHS was called in to check out his injuries and the man was taken to hospital.

Colton Leigh Thibaul, of Weymouth remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court to face three counts of assaulting a peace officer, impaired operation of a conveyance, refusing to provide a breath sample, four counts of failing to comply with a release order and three counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.
