Effie Catherine Matchem

November 21, 1940 – October 7, 2018

With heavy hearts we remember Effie ‘Catherine’ Matchem (Cluett), born November 21, 1940, in Frenchman’s Cove, Newfoundland; she is the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Selena,’Mini’ (Bond) Cluett, who passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the QEII Hospital , Nova Scotia.  She was surrounded by her loving family.

Effie was the beloved wife for 57 years, to John Matchem, formerly of Little Passage, NL.

Effie moved to Halifax, NS at the young age of 16.  She worked at Camphill Hospital until she began raising her family of four.  Effie then spent the rest of her career working at the Pictou Bakery for 11 years and then 28 years as the Resident Manager of Killam Properties in Halifax.  She is still known today as baking the best bread rolls and donuts out there.

She loved to do many things such as playing crib every night with her dear husband Jack; bingo, ramoli, watching her beloved Blue Jays.  Most importantly she cherished time spent with her 7 grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband John (Jack), Matchem; her daughters, Catherine (Peter Webber), Halifax, NS; Jacqueline (Brenton Daley), Scotsburn, NS; Rita (Philip Caissie), Bridgewater, NS; son David Matchem, Pictou, NS.  Effie loved dearly her 7 grandchildren: Shannon, Thomas, Lindsay, Allison, Lauren, Tyler and Jorja.  She is survived by her sisters, Doris (Jim Day), Garnish, NL; Rita (Roy Hardiman), Garnish NL; Ilene (Harold Matthews), Burin, NL; Marion Parsons, St. Johns, NL; Linda Bulger, St. Johns, NL; Hazel Harding, Eastern Passage, NS; brothers, Walt (Rose), Grand Prairie, Texas; Morley (Verna Webber), Country Harbour, NS.  She was predeceased by her parents Eugene and Mary Selena (Bond); and Sister Gwen.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Wayne MacLeod, receptionist Mary Joe, QEII Emergency nurses and doctors who showed us nothing but compassion in a very difficult time.  A very special thank you to Dr. Lazar Milovanovic for his thoughtful care and compassion to our mother and father.  Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at Rockingham United Church on Thursday, October 11 at 2:00pm.  A reception will follow in the Rockingham Church Hall, Halifax.  Donations in Effie’s memory can be made to the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia.
