After the death of his mother when he was three years old, he was brought up by his grandparents, Henry and Grace Burton in Weymouth Mills, Digby County, NS. He received his Interprovincial Carpenter's license and his Grade 12NS. He was most proud of being part of the construction of the Annapolis Tidal Power Project and the Crosskill Court Senior's Apartments at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. When he was forced to stop work because of poor health he passed his time washing dishes, and drinking coffee at the Lawrencetown Restaurant, building picnic tables and mowing people's lawns.
