A single vehicle crash on Cape Breton Island has claimed the life of one motorist, and sent another to hospital.

On Saturday evening at 9:20 p.m., RCMP were called to Kelly's Mountain in Victoria County after calls of a vehicle that had been towing a trailer left the road, rolled and caught fire.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lisa Croteau says the vehicle was hauling a small utility trailer.

Mounties say the driver died at the scene, while the passenger was taken to hospital for what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

The road had been closed for a few hours, and through the overnight was reduced to one lane while police conducted their investigation.

As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, the road was still reduced to one lane.
