RCMP say the driver of a transport truck lost control of their vehicle because a mattress was lying on Highway 104.

The truck struck an oncoming vehicle head-on Saturday evening in Barneys River Station, killing a 51-year-old woman and a 74-year-old woman, both from Antigonish.

The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the mattress flew off the roof of another vehicle.

They believe the driver of that car was a Trenton man. Devon Michael Dewtie, 19, was arrested at a home in Greenwood on Sunday.

He's been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death.

After appearing in Pictou Provincial Court, Dewtie has been released on conditions and is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 12.
