A 17-year-old Bridgetown girl is dead after RCMP say she lost control of her car while negotiating a turn Sunday evening.

Mounties say the vehicle hit a utility police on Highway 201 in Centrelea. It was found heavily damaged and overturned in a ditch.

A retired police officer and other bystanders tried to help her while emergency crews made their way to the scene.

The teen was extricated from the vehicle and rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to Halifax, but succumbed to her injuries.

Police are still investigating the crash and say their thoughts are with the victim's family.
