An upcoming exhibit in Annapolis Royal will be showcasing the artistic talents of current and former members of the military and first responders.

The Steel Spirit is organized Barbara Brown, who is looking for submissions.

"We're looking for a variety of different artwork, it could be leather work, metal work, woodworking, photography, painting," she explained. "We like to display all of the artwork, along with the biography of the artist under the art work."

Brown told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show, the exhibit will be as much about showcasing the artists as it is about displaying the art.

"Their experiences and their backgrounds, because there's lots of civilians who don't know they type of work they do, and they don't know all the things they've been involved in," she said.

Shortly after training to be a paramedic, Brown's life changed when she was in a car crash with a 400 pound black bear.

She was inspired by Prince Harry's Invictus Games to launch The Steel Spirit a couple years ago while her husband, a war crimes investigator, was deployed.

"I have such value for military life and first responders. I wanted to have a platform of recognition for them."

The first two installments of The Steel Spirit happened in Barrie, Ont. where Brown now lives.

She said there were some first time artists on display.

"We had an anonymous contribution from a gentleman who had never done artwork before but he wanted to tell his story," Brown said. "It ended up being such a relatable piece that so many other people identified with it, especially from the services."

"It's such a wonderful outlet, and it's so positive as well."

Those interested in submitting work can get more information online.

The Steel Spirit runs at the Round Hill Studio in Annapolis Royal from June 1 to June 9.
