Nova Scotia Power responds to 'significant damage and disruptions' (update)

Nova Scotia Power and contractor crews are making good progress on restoration efforts in the aftermath of a very powerful storm that brought strong winds yesterday (THURSDAY) and today, causing power disruptions across the province.

“The crews and planning team have done a remarkable job responding to the storm,” said Karen Hutt, President and CEO of Nova Scotia Power. “The forecasted weather has largely played out as anticipated. Because of that we’ve gone into the event with a very good plan that allowed us to have the right resources positioned in the right places, and we are seeing positive restoration results. The storm has moved through Cape Breton at this point and we’re already making steady progress there.”

As of 3 p.m., Nova Scotia Power has restored power to 243,000 customers – working through the night and through storm conditions, when it was safe to do so. Approximately 37,000 customers remain without power of the 280,000 who lost service yesterday (THURSDAY) and today.

“Based on information collected by crews getting eyes on many of the current outages, we will have the majority of customers who lost power restored today (FRIDAY), and virtually all customers will be restored throughout tomorrow (SATURDAY),” said Hutt.

As teams access outage sites and field-validate what repairs are needed, estimated restoration times are being updated. Customer can get those updates by going to the outage map at outagemap.nspower.ca or by calling our outage line at 1-877-428-6004.

To help ensure power is restored as quickly as possible, customers should check for damage to their electrical equipment, such as their meter mast, which is the tube that connects the service line to a customer’s home to their electric meter. If their electrical equipment is damaged, customers need a certified electrician to make repairs before Nova Scotia Power can safely restore power. A list of electricians who are prepared to help is available at
www.nspower.ca/electricians, and Customer Care Representatives can also help connect customers to electricians at 1-877-428-6004.

More than 1,000 people continue to be dedicated to storm response, including frontline powerline and forestry crews, damage assessors, planners, engineers, support staff, and customer care representatives. Crews will continue to safely work as quickly as possible on restorations.

In situations where there are multiple power outages, Nova Scotia Power restores power in phases to ensure critical services like hospitals can stay open before beginning work in other areas. Larger outages on transmission lines and in substations are restored ahead of smaller outages to restore electricity to the greatest number of customers.

Nova Scotia Power customer service centres in Kentville, Chester, Stellarton and Shelburne, as well as our head office in Halifax, are open as comfort centres from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Customers who’ve lost power can warm up, have some coffee or hot chocolate, and recharge their devices. The specific locations are:

• Kentville – 3 Calkin Drive
• Chester – 96 Valley Road
• Stellarton – 26 Bridge Avenue
• Shelburne – 261 Ohio Road
• Halifax – 1223 Lower Water Street

Additional comfort centres available across the province will be added to the list at nspower.ca as they become known.
