Tens of thousands of Nova Scotians remain in the dark as of Thursday morning, five days out from Hurricane Dorian impacting the province.

The exact number of customers out was 33,081 at 7 a.m. Those customers in the dark due to a total of 4,639 outages.

Nova Scotia Power has said the large number of outages effecting in some cases just a handful of customers is part of the reason restoration efforts are taking so long.

In the Halifax area, about 1,000 customers were still without power Thursday morning. Restoration times for most of the outages were set for Thursday at 11 p.m., according to the utility's outage map.

Meantime, all schools in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education had power restored, and were open as usual on Thursday.
