The Department of Justice says an inmate found unresponsive in his cell at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility has died.

They say staff found the 29-year-old man at around 9:30 p.m. Monday and immediately began CPR.

He was taken to the Dartmouth General Hospital where he died Tuesday afternoon with his next of kin present.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the incident and the province's justice department will be conducting an internal investigation.

"I was saddened to hear of the tragic outcome and can assure you that the department will work with police and others as the investigation continues," said Minister of Justice Mark Furey in a news release.
