There will be no swimming at Lake Echo Beach until further notice.

The Halifax Regional Municipality says recent tests at the Lake Echo swimming spot indicate bacteria levels have exceeded Health Canada guidelines.

"High bacteria levels can be caused by a number of factors, including dogs, birds, wildlife, and high temperatures," HRM said in a news release.

The municipality will send out a notification when it reopens.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, a risk advisory remains in effect for Shubenacadie-Grand Lake due to the presence of blue-green algae. People are encouraged to avoid swimming in the lake and prevent pets from entering it.

Residents can check the status of their favourite municipal beach online.
