Friday is International Winter Bike to Work Day and the Halifax Cycling Coalition has been celebrating with a week of events.
Winter Bike Week in HRM is being held to encourage cycling in all seasons.
"I think a lot of people are generally a bit discouraged [this time of year] just due to the weather," said coalition's executive director Rachel Lynn. "But if you have the right precautions, the right equipment and clothing, it's definitely doable."
Lynn said there's no reason to stop cycling just because it's cold outside.
"You can have balaclavas and you can have toques under your helmet," she told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show. "Also visibility is also important in the winter because it can be pretty harsh. You can get ski goggles or better lights in the winter."
Studded tires can be purchased for bicycles to increase traction and fenders will protect you from excess spray.
Lynn added it's important to know your limits, saying "safety first no matter what."
In addition to International Winter Bike to Work Day, the Halifax Cycling Coalition will be throwing a birthday party and awards show on Friday
They'll also be hosting a bike maintenance workshop Saturday morning.
