The province's independent police watchdog is investigating after a female alleges she was sexually assaulted by a male Halifax Regional Police officer during an arrest.

According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), it's alleged the assault took place on June 30 in the vehicle being used to transport her to the HRP cells.

"The Police Act gives SiRT sole jurisdiction over the investigation of sexual assault allegations made against a police officer," said a news release from the organization's independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.

Cacchione has three months following the completion of the investigation to file a public report summarizing the findings.
