The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is applauding recent news of a professional lacrosse franchise coming to the city.

The chamber's president and CEO Patrick Sullivan said he expects the team, along with the Halifax Wanderers and Memorial Cup, to bolster the downtown economy.

The city went through what Sullivan called "growing pains" with development in the downtown core.

He said local businesses can expect to see a nice boost now that the smoke has mostly settled.

"The opportunity for local business and the opportunity for residents to see some of these great sports and take advantage of great restaurants, I think this is really going to help the downtown core," said Sullivan.

The Halifax NLL franchise will start playing out of its new home in December 2019.
