When the Memorial Cup tournament hits Halifax, the party will go well beyond the rink.
The committee organizing the 2019 Memorial Cup announced details of the Street Fest on Argyle Street that will accompany the Canadian Hockey League championship tournament in May.
The lineup is filled with nearly 20 Nova Scotian musical acts, including The Trews, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Matt Mays, Ria Mae, Adam Baldwin and Sloan.
Richard Butts, co-chair of the committee, said they wanted to make sure they utilized the province's talent.
"When you have so much talent in a province, it doesn't make any sense to go outside the province," he said. "We were excited to get Nova Scotian talent."
There will also be a special performance by Canadian country music star Gord Bamford on Saturday, May 25th.
Butts said Memorial Cup suits the mandate of both the province and the municipality. He believes it will have a positive economic impact on both.
"There will be a lot of activity around town and it's a great advertisement for Halifax because we'll be on national TV 10 nights in a row," said Butts.
"Getting the rest of the country to see it, they'll be onside with what a terrific jewel we have in Halifax."
In addition to hockey and some of Nova Scotia's best musicians, all the games will be broadcast on TV screens lining the streets.
"And we have a family event that happens every day at the convention centre, so bring your kids down, bring your parents down, it's an event for everybody," Butts said. "It's accessible, it's attractive, it's going to be great weather, and you're going to get the opportunity to see, either on TV or in the rink, to see the best 19 and 20 year old hockey players in the world."
All performances will be free to the general public.
