UPDATE: HRM now says Cunard, Kearney and Kinsmen beaches have reopened

There will be no swimming at three local beaches until further notice.

Halifax Regional Municipality says recent tests at Williams Lake's Cunard Beach, Lower Sackville's Kinsmen Beach and Kearney Beach at Kearney Lake indicate bacteria levels have exceeded Health Canada guidelines.

"High bacteria levels can be caused by a number of factors, including dogs, birds, wildlife, and high temperatures," HRM said in a news release.

The water quality at all supervised beaches in HRM, along with four unsupervised municipal beaches, is regularly tested in the summer months.

Residents can check the status of their favourite municipal beach online.
