Fire investigators, with the aid of an excavator, are sifting through a house that was heavily damaged by an early morning fire in Herring Cove.
Firefighters were called to Tribune Court just after 4 a.m. Friday after getting a number of reports of a large house fire.
Deputy chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, Roy Hollett, residents were able to escape, but one person was treated for smoke inhalation.
He said the fire was too intense for crews to get inside the building, so they fought it from the outside in what is called a defensive attack.
Crews also sprayed the surrounding woods to help prevent the fire from spreading.
The cause remains unknown at this point.
