Dorian downed power lines, uprooted trees and blew away anything not tied down as it hit Halifax Saturday.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre says the hurricane interacted with a trough approaching the Maritimes, which increased its strength just before reaching Nova Scotia's southwestern shore.

Conditions started to quickly deteriorate by mid-morning, as torrential rains and strong wind gusts spread across the province.

Pounding waves damaged the Halifax waterfront, while extreme winds caused a construction crane to collapse.

The storm reached post-tropical status just before making landfall in Sambro Creek, near Crystal Crescent Beach at around 7 p.m. that night as a hurricane strength post-tropical cyclone with a pressure of 958 millibars.

Rainfall rates of over 30 mm/h were reported over central and northern Nova Scotia.

Lower Sackville tied Oxford for the most rainfall with 138 mm.

Dorian's biggest wind gust in Canada was registered in Wreckhouse, Newfoundland at 157 km/h, while the weather station on Beaver Island, near Sheet Harbour, got a peak gust of 145 km/h.

"The Halifax tide gauge reported a water level of 2.9 metres with a surge of 1.5 metres," said the Canadian Hurricane Centre.
